Diego:Although Diego enjoyed his trips to the coast he hated being away from home too long. He had a great time visiting with old friends in California, and business was now settled. He hated spending his nights alone in empty hotel rooms while he knew his wife was back home waiting for his return. His missed his wife and children, even though he didn't get to see his kids every day it was nice to know that they were nearby. Saturday mornings away were always the worst for him. He had become accustomed to leaving Lourdes a poem on his pillow every Saturday morning along with a flower before he went to work. He felt empty knowing that she would miss him more than usual when she woke up since she was left without a parting word. Sundays where bad, too. Sunday he would get dressed in his finest clothes and go to Mass with his wife, and if he was lucky one of the kids would join. Every other day of the week was shity on the road, just because he knew one of his kids might drop by the house and he wouldn't be there. Diego just felt like there was no place like home.
Diego's keys jingled as he unlocked the front door to his house. He shut the door behind himself, and tossed his bags on the floor. He was tired and just wanted to relax with Lourdes. As he went deeper into the house he could smell something cooking, he couldn't wait to have some of his wife's home cooked food. He entered the kitchen and saw his wife standing between the refrigerator and the stove. He leaned against the archway and smiled as he watched her dance around the kitchen. "Hola," he shouted in an attempt to frighten her.
Lourdes:Lourdes was lost in thought, hips swaying slowly to the song she hummed as she made dinner. Nothing fancy tonight, she wasn't expecting Diego home until Saturday evening and she didn't want more left overs than usual. Just a salad with some of the left over Jamacian Jerk she'd made earlier in the week. If there was one place in the world Lourdes Cardenas was comfortable, it was her own home. The only place she didn't keep herself armed was on this property, though there were several guns stashed in each room. This of course saved Diego's life when he shouted his greeting and she started, turning around with wide, dangerous eyes. "Diego Cárdenas que idiota! ¿Estás tratando de conseguirse tiro?" she asked, her heart beating rapidly.
She put down the knife in her hand and moved around the island. Lourdes knew what worked for her, and the first thing that did was her curves. She wore a tight fitting yellow blouse, a pair of tight fitting jean shorts. "Welcome home, Mi Amor."
Diego:With knife in hand Diego couldn't help but laugh at her. His Italian leather boots made a small clacking sound against the floor as he crossed the kitchen and made his way towards his startled wife. He removed his cream colored double-breasted jacket and tossed it on the counter. Underneath he wore a collard shirt and waistcoat.
Diego knew what kind of women he was marrying when he proposed to her at gun point. He was very excited to see his wife and couldn't help but have fun surprising her when he came home early. "Calma." His hands motioned downward. He came closer to her and gave her a small kiss as he slipped his arm around her waist and tightened his embrace for a well needed hug. "How is mi reina?"
Lourdes:She returned the kiss, her arms holding him back. She never realized how much she had truly missed him until she was reunited with him. "Did everything go all right with your meeting?" she asked. Business first, acting like love struck teenagers next. This was a big connection of they could work out a deal, the problem was coming to good terms. She pulled back and led him further into the kitchen. "What do you want for dinner? No left overs for you."
She moved to the fridge, pulling out meat and vegetables, the moving to get spices and rice. "Anything you want as long as it's not sea food, I need to go to the market."
Diego:Diego nodded his head with a big smile on his face. He was relieved that business was going good and he was back home. "Manuel asked about you and the kids." He had a small flash back to the day that he met Lourdes thanks to Manuel. Without him Diego would be working a 9 to 5 at a crumby desk and without the love of his life.
"I told him everything was good." Diego took off his hat and placed next to his blazer along with his phone and keys. "I'm tired and I haven't been feeling too hot," he rubbed his eyes. "You know how airplanes get me." He raised his eyebrows and made a face at his wife and shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not that hungry, give me some of whatever you have going on over there," he peered over her shoulder to try to sneak a peek at what she had been preparing. "Anything you make is better than what I have been having for the past week." Diego walked around the counter and took a seat.
Lourdes:She smiled at the mention of Manuel. "He called me a few night ago, mentioned possibly coming into town," Lourdes replied, glancing over her shoulder at her husband. "If you're not feeling well then what I have isn't going to help at all. What about rice and pintos, hm?" she asked with a told of her head. Flying always put him off, unsettling his stomach, making him slightly irritable. She pulled the beans out to warm, replacing everything else before putting the rice on and going round the island, sliding up next to him and wrapping her arms around his neck loosely.
I missed you horribly," she said softly. "If not for forcing the children to come over I might have completely lost my mind from boredom. I think I need a new hobby to replace them," she said with a soft chuckle.
Diego:Diego smiled,"That would be nice. He has been wanting to see the kids." Manuel had been there at the birth of the eldest daughter and had always asked about the kids when ever Diego talked to him. He watched as Lourdes moved about the kitchen going back forth between the refrigerator, and counter. Diego shrugged at the suggestion of rice, "What ever you want, Riena." Diego never fought Lourdes on anything anymore. Since he hadn't been feeling well he knew that he should just listen to her, and she could turn him around, get him up to speed both physically and mentally.
He placed his hands on her hips and smiled at her as she clung to him. "I missed you too," he gave her a small kiss. "And the kids." Diego nodded at the mention of the kids and her needing a new hobby. "Why don't we have another baby?" Diego always wanted to have another baby, although he knew that Lourdes would say no he asked any way.
Lourdes:Lourdes gave him an incredulous look as he suggested having another baby. "Are you crazy?" she asked. "We just got the last two out of the house and you want more dirty diapers, teething, potty training, school projects, braces, worry about them at all hours once they learn to drive? Not to mention you having to threaten numerous boys if it's a girl?" she asked, a hand falling to her hip. "I'm starting to think you're losing your mind." She chuckled and then kissed his temple before moving back to the stove.
"What we need is to get that oldest daughter of ours to settle down and give us grand children. And then go on a cruise. Or go to Australia." There were many things that they hadn't gotten to do as a young couple, including really getting to know themselves as a couple and not a family, and she was finally realizing she could take advantage of this time and get those things.
Diego:Diego knew that Lourdes had been suffering of empty nest syndrome. And with a husband who traveled a lot she got lonely often. He laughed when she called him crazy, "Not yet," he thought to himself. Diego thought about all the scenarios Lourdes named, the difficult toddler years when you wish they would grow up quicker, and then the teen years when you wished they were baby again. Being a parent was hard enough with out adding their life style to the mix. He smiled when she kissed his head, and let her go back to the kitchen.
"It would be nice to have grand kids, wouldn't it." Diego pictured his oldest daughters wedding, and then first pregnancy. "As long she finds a good guy that loves her first," he shook his head. "I don't want her to end up unhappy, that's why I don't put pressure on her." He watched as Lourdes started to prepare his food. "Australia? I say we go to the Dominican Republic, again," the Cardenas had a beach home back in DR that hadn't had any visitors in a long. "Its been a while since we're been. We should go before summer ends. Just us two, what do you think?"
Lourdes:Lourdes smiled softly. "Si, miha needs a good man like her father. But all our children are too wild. None of them seem to be interested in settling down," she tsked. She had been more than happy to marry Diego so young. She had been ecstatic. As such it made it hard for her to understand how her children weren't after the same thing.
She was excited about the prospect of of going back to Dominica. "On one condition," she said with a playful smile. "You have to make love to me on the porch in the pouring rain like you promised all those years ago."
Diego:Diego rubbed his eyes and let out a small yawn. His back as well as his knee had been bothering him since his flight to the coast, he was sore all over. "Yeah, they are," he agreed with her. "I wonder who they get it from." A small laugh escaped his lips. He knew that they had inherited their restlessness from some one other than them. "We were crazy to get married so young. But we turned out okay."
Diego was glad that she wanted to revisit the Dominican Republic, he wasn't sure that her idea of vacation was the same as his. Diego laughed, "If my body is up to it, I will make love to you every day, Reina." On a more serious note he thought of his parents, he had them sent back home when they passed and wanted to pay them a visit. "Plus its been a while since I have left flowers for mami y papi."
Lourdes:Lourdes was well aware of how tired her husband got on these trips, he never relaxed when he was away. She dished out his food and put it in front of him before taking her salad over and sitting next to him. "Next trip I'll go on," she said, rubbing his neck gently. "Or maybe we should let Miguel go with you. You know he wants to help more." She did not like the idea of her children in this life longer than they had to be, but her son was smart. The mention of Diego's parent's made her smile though. She missed them terribly, they had become such a big part of her own life. "Si, Amor, we need to see them. Have a nice slow week or two," she said with a smile. "It sounds wonderful."
She looked over at him with a smile. "Do you want bed after this? I can rub your back, help you relax. Knowing you, you slept horribly while you were gone."
Diego:Diego leaned back in the stool he sat on and unbuttoned the top of his shirt. He felt under his shirt for a pendant. Once he found it he kissed the virgin and tucked the chain back into his shirt. "Me llevo a Miguel," he said as he picked up the fork she placed for him. He wasn't completely comfortable with any of his children being in the business but if he had to choose one it would be Miguel. Miguel seemed to have a head for the business and was able to delegate properly, but Diego kept putting it off for years. He knew that Miguel always wanted to help out and taking him on his next trip would show him that Diego thought he was finally ready. "I know Miguel will help me a lot," he gave a week smile as his train of thought drifted towards his parents and vacation.
He began to move around the rice and beans and finally took a forkful to his mouth, "Yes," he put his hand on the back of his neck where she had just touched. "I would love you to."
Lourdes:Lourdes knew how Diego could be about the children. They had never verbally spoken about what they would do if one of their children wanted to follow in fheir footsteps because the plan had always been to encourage everything but. She ate slowly, a hand staying on him the whole time. "Hopefully it'll help you relax, help you to sleep."
She worried too much about her family, and she chalked it up to not having this kind of security as a child. "Things have been quiet here, I know you'll be happy for that."
